Pentagon Eyewitnesses' Flight Path Descriptions

On average, witness descriptions (unpruned by CIT) match physical evidence path:

COLUMBIA PIKE

  • Penny Elgas : "coming straight at us from over the road (Columbia Pike) that runs perpendicular to the road I was on. The plane just appeared there—very low in the air, to the side of (and not much above) the CITGO gas station, then it banked in the slightest turn in front of me, toward the heliport." source

I-395

  • Gary Bauer : I had just passed the closest place the Pentagon is to the exit on 395… we realized the jet was coming up behind us on that major highway. And it veered to the right into the Pentagon. source
  • Tom Hovis : "The plane came up I-395, also known as Shirley Hwy." source
  • John O’Keefe : "I was going up 395, up Washington Blvd… and from my left side…I saw a silver plane… It came swooping in over the highway, over my left shoulder, straight across where my car was heading." source
  • Mark Petitt : "It actually came up I-395 and it went over the rise and came in front of a bridge in which I was sitting [in traffic]." source
  • Kirk Milburn : "I was right underneath the plane", said Kirk Milburn, a construction supervisor for Atlantis Co., who was on the Arlington National Cemetery exit of Interstate 395." source
  • Steve Storti : "Time seemed to slip into slow motion as he watched the plane cross over Route 395, tip its left wing as it passed the Navy annex, veer sharply and then slice into the Pentagon." source
  • Jim Sutherland : "A white 737 twin-engine plane with multicolored trim fly 50 feet over I-395 in a straight line." source
  • Tim Timmerman : "I looked out to the southwest, and it came right down 395, right over Colombia Pike, and as is went by the Sheraton Hotel." source
  • Michael Tinyk : "The plane took "a flight path straight up 395." source
  • Don Wright :"I watched it come in very low over the trees and it just dipped down and came down right over 395 right into the Pentagon." source

WASHINGTON BLVD (Rt 27)

  • Donald Bouchoux : "At 9:40 a.m. I was driving down Washington Boulevard (Route 27) along the side of the Pentagon when the aircraft crossed about 200 yards… in front of me" source
  • Scott Cook : "[it] had come up the river in back of our building, turned sharply over the Capitol, ran past the White House and the Washington Monument, up the river to Rosslyn, then dropped to treetop level and ran down Washington Boulevard to the Pentagon." source

ARMY NAVY DRIVE

  • Ian Wyatt : "I was so scared I thought it was coming after me and just ducked for cover… It was going so fast and it was so low," he said, standing on Army-Navy Drive." source

THE NAVY ANNEX

  • Christopher Munsey : "A silver, twin-engine American airlines jetliner gliding almost noiselessly over the Navy Annex." source
  • Albert Hemphill : "seemed to come directly over the annex, as if it had been following Columbia Pike—an Arlington road leading to Pentagon."
  • Levi Stephens : "Personnel working in the Navy Annex, over which the airliner flew… saw this [plane] come flying over the Navy Annex."
  • Terry Morin : "At the BMDO offices at the old Navy Annex. The aircraft was essentially right over the top of me and the outer portion of the FOB (flight path parallel the outer edge of the FOB)… Within seconds the plane cleared the 8th wing of BMDO and was heading directly towards the Pentagon." source
