Dust From the South Tower

Photographer Bill Biggart was killed in the attack on New York City, but not before he took several photos. In the first four photos, Bill was standing just north of the towers on West Street. He photographed the explosive cloud from the South Tower's destruction, following it to the ground and until it engulfed him. The last photograph was taken, after the dust had settled, from a few hundred feet south of the others on West Street. It is of WTC 3, the Marriot hotel, much of which had been crushed by the shredded steel columns of the South Tower's northwest perimeter wall falling on it. The first photograph shows many of those column sections falling ahead of the dust cloud. The last photograph shows three pieces of the perimeter wall stuck into the ground in the foreground. A still-standing piece of the South Tower's northeast wall can seen through the gap in WTC 3.
